Chapter 17

Biddy moves in with Pip to help the recovery of Mrs Joe. Pip visits Ms Havisham again and realises how dull and boring it is without Estella. Pip invites Biddy for a walk, while walking he confesses how unsatisfied he is with his life and that although he likes Biddy he tells her how he loves Estella. Biddy tells him to stop following Estella and Pip gets angry at her, however he still gets jealous when Orlick flirts with Biddy.

Chapter 18

Pip is at a pub with Mr Wopsle and Joe, Mr Wopsle is reading the story of a murder trial when a man enters and challenges him about the legal details of the murder trial. He then presents himself as a lawyer named ‘Jaggers’ and says he’ll explain why he’s there at the house. At the house he then tells Pip and Joe that Pip is about to inherit a huge fortune and that he will be attending education as a gentleman immediately. Pip will move to London to become a gentleman however the lawyer doesn’t reveal who the doner is. Pip thinks that it is Miss Havisham since he first met Jaggers at her house. Mr Jaggers also, offers Joe money because Pip was leaving, Joe feels sad that Pip will be leaving however happy that Pip gets what he wants. Pip sees Biddy and Joe talking together that night and felt sorry for leaving them.

Chapter 16

Pip feels guilty about the attack on his sister because it was thought to be his convicts leg iron which was used as a weapon. Mrs Joe is severely injured and cannot move or speak however, she could write. She drew a ‘T’ and Pip realised that she was referring to Orlick. Orlick enters and they presume that he was the attacker however, Mrs Joe seemed really happy to see him even after there argument.
